Foster the People is an American indie pop band formed in Los Angeles, California in 2009.Members Mark Foster (vocals, keyboards, piano, synthesizers, guitar, programming, percussion), Mark Pontius (drums and extra percussion), and Cubbie Fink (bass and backing vocals) formed the band while in their mid-twenties. Mark Pontius used to play drums and shoot/edit the music videos for the indie pop band Malbec.
Mark Foster originally named his band Foster & the People, but people misheard it as "Foster the People". Eventually, he took to the nurturing image it evoked of "taking care" of the people, so the name stuck. NPR credits the band's rise to fame to getting play on The Hype Machine and performances at South by Southwest. The band is best known for its song "Pumped Up Kicks", which reached number one on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, number 3 on the Rock Songs tally and number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The new Bush album, The Sea of Memories, is steeped in the notion that one has to know where they came from to know where they’re going. “We are the sum of everything we’ve done -- right, wrong and in-between,” says singer and guitarist Gavin Rossdale. “We’re all victims, and benefactors, of our past.” And Bush should know. The British-born band has had more success over the course of their first half-dozen years than most artists do in a lifetime. From Sixteen Stone to The Science of Things, they made some of the most successful rock albums in recent memory. The seminal outfit also forged a sound that would come to characterize an entire decade.
Today, Rossdale is mining the past for clues to the future, and has come up with an album that reflects both sides of that time quotient. On The Sea of Memories, he’s resurrected the band with drummer Robin Goodridge, guitarist Chris Traynor and bassist Corey Britz. “When making music, you have a choice to repeat what you’ve done or move on,” says Rossdale. “It would’ve been safe to just rework Sixteen Stone over and over, but what kind of life would that be? When you’re driving down the road, you’re focused on what’s in front of you; you don’t really think to keep checking in your rear view mirror. I like the idea of art changing, developing and morphing.”
The Sea of Memories is drenched in Bush’s trademark intensity and driven by Rossdale’s emotive, bittersweet vocals, but it’s also infused with an immediacy that pushes the album into new, compelling directions. From their lead single, the atmospheric powerhouse “The Sound of Winter,” to the rapid-fire exuberance of “All My Life,” Bush reveals itself as a re-energized band. It’s a fresh mindset that’s at least partially influenced by events surrounding the making of this record.
Cage the Elephant is an American rock band from Bowling Green, Kentucky, that formed in mid-2006. Since their formation, the band has gained a large following in the US as well as the UK and Canada for their sound and their high-energy live performances. The band released their self-titled debut album, Cage the Elephant on May 19, 2008 (June 23, 2008 in the UK). The album made them very popular in both continents. On January 11, 2011, the group released their second effort, Thank You, Happy Birthday (March 21, 2011 in the UK). The second album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200,and earned the band much positive reception. Both albums were produced by Jay Joyce of Jive Records.
Cake is an American alternative rock band from Sacramento, California. Consisting of singer John McCrea, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, guitarist Xan McCurdy, bassist Gabe Nelson and drummer Paulo Baldi, the band has been noted for McCrea's sarcastic lyrics and deadpan voice, DiFiore's trumpet parts, and their wide-ranging musical influences, including countrymusic, Mariachi, rock, funk, Iranian folk music and hip-hop.
Cake was formed in 1991 by McCrea, DiFiore, Greg Brown, Frank French and Shon Meckfessel, who soon left and was replaced by Nelson. Following the self-release of its debut album, Motorcade of Generosity, the band was signed to Capricorn Records in 1995 and released its first single, "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle", which hit number 35 on the Modern Rock Tracks music chart and was featured on MTV's 120 Minutes; French and Nelson then left the band, and were replaced by Todd Roper and Victor Damiani. Cake's second album, Fashion Nugget, was released in 1996; on the strength of the lead single, "The Distance", it went platinum. Following a tour of Europe and the United States, both Brown and Damiani announced they were leaving Cake, which led to speculation about the band's future; McCrea eventually recruited Xan McCurdy to take over on guitar, and persuaded Nelson to return.
After creating its own label, Upbeat Records, the band released Showroom of Compassion in 2011, which became its first album to debut at the top of the Billboard charts, selling 44,000 copies in the first week after release.
Taking Back Sunday is an American rock band from Long Island, NY, formed in 1999 by guitarist Eddie Reyes. Current members of the band are Adam Lazzara (lead vocalist), John Nolan (guitar/vocals), Eddie Reyes (guitar), Shaun Cooper (bass) and Mark O'Connell (drums). The band has released 3 studio albums with past various members Fred Mascherino (former guitarist / background vocalist), Matthew Rubano (former bassist), and Matthew Fazzi (former guitarist / background vocalist). The original Tell All Your Friends line-up had released only 2 studio albums.
Louder Now (2006), is the bands breakout album, notably for the single MakeDamnSure. The album has sold over 900,000+ copies and has peaked at #2 in the United States Billboard 200, closely followed by Where You Want to Be (2004), which peaked at #3 in 2004. Before the release of their first studio album Tell All Your Friends (2002), they had released Taking Back Sunday EP (2001), in which the band previously varied of former vocalist Antonio Longo, Jesse Lacey (bass / who later formed with Brand New) and Steven DeJoseph (drums / later replaced by Mark O'Connell). At the time, the EP received very little attention which eventually resulted in the band seeking a new singer. Adam Lazzara had later stepped into the spot for vocals. John Nolan and Shaun Cooper had previously left the band in 2003 only to reform later on and release their eponymous album Taking Back Sunday on June 28, 2011. The album was produced by Eric Valentine and released through Warner Bros. Records.
The Naked and Famous are a New Zealand indie rock band from Auckland. Their single "Young Blood" debuted on the New Zealand chart at number one in 2010—the first New Zealand artist in three years to do so. The Naked and Famous released their debut studio album, Passive Me, Aggressive You, on 6 September 2010.
On 6 December 2010, the BBC announced that The Naked and Famous had been nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2011 poll.In 2011, the band garnered six nominations at the New Zealand Music Awards for Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Group, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Best Alternative Album and the People's Choice Award. They were also nominated for the NZ On Air Best Music Video and won the MAINZ Best Engineer Award and the MAINZ Best Producer Award.
Young the Giant is an American rock band that formed in Irvine, California, in 2004. The band's line-up is Sameer Gadhia (lead vocals), Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar), Payam Doostzadeh (bass guitar), and François Comtois (drums). Formerly known as The Jakes, Young the Giant was signed by Roadrunner Records in 2009 and released its eponymous debut album in 2010. The band's first single "My Body" was released to U.S. radio in January and went on to peak at number five on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The exposure from the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards performance propelled Young the Giant onto the Billboard 200 albums chart, where it eventually peaked at number 42. Sales for "My Body" climbed 220 percent on iTunes, helping the single reach number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Sleeper Agent, the overachieving Little Garage-Pop Act That Could from Bowling Green, Kentucky made up of Drummer, Justin Wilson and his bandmates—female singer Alex Kandel, singer-guitarist Tony Smith, bassist Lee Williams, guitarist Josh Martin, and keyboardist Scott Gardner played their first show together in 2010. Most of the tracks on their self-titled album, including their hit song “Get it Daddy,” produced by Mom + Pop Records (Sleigh Bells, Metric)—are studies in relationships, both familial and romantic. And many of them, he adds, “I write from Alex’s perspective, how I think she’s feeling.” This shift in perspective is key to Sleeper Agent’s appeal: While the playful tug of war between the male and female vocals coolly recalls everyone from X to The XX, the immediate warmth they emit is entirely their own. Their debut album, entitled "Celabrasion" produced by Jay Joyce, Sleeper Agent is on their mark to get set and awaken your love for all things rock.
Grouplove is an American Indie-rock band formed in 2009 by Hannah Hooper (lead vocals) , Christian Zucconi (vocals, guitar), Sean Gadd (bass), Andrew Wessen (guitars) and Ryan Rabin (drummer). The group's full length debut album titled "Never Trust a Happy Ending", was released first in the UK and then released in September 2011 in the US. The band has been touring in the US as an opening act for Florence and the Machine and has several tour dates in the UK. Their song Goldcoast was used in the film The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
